It began with one man, five bottle-fed Holstein calves, and a vision that hard work could build something lasting.
That man was Grandpa Dean Carter.
Where the Legacy Began
In 1955, Grandpa Dean purchased five bottle-fed Holstein calves, unknowingly laying the foundation for what would become six generations of Carter family ranching. What started as a few calves quickly grew into a lifelong passion for raising cattle and caring for the land.
Years later, after operating a dairy in Washington, Dean returned home to Minersville, Utah, where he shifted his focus from dairy to beef cattle. Never one to settle, he continually improved his herd by investing in quality genetics and building a reputation for raising exceptional cattle.
But if you asked our family what Grandpa Dean's greatest accomplishment was, it wouldn't simply be the cattle he raised.
It would be the values he lived every single day.
Those values continue to guide Original Carter Cattle today.

For Grandpa Dean, ranching wasn't simply a career.

Carrying the Tradition Forward
The Carter family's passion for ranching didn't end with Grandpa Dean.
His son, Rodney Carter, grew up learning alongside him and purchased his first cows at just 17 years old with the help of a loan from Grandpa Dean. Together they continued expanding the herd while building upon the principles that had been established decades earlier.
In 2008, Rodney officially established Carter Cattle, creating the foundation that would eventually grow into Original Carter Cattle.
Today, our family's ranching story has expanded even further through the heritage of the Yardley family. Together, both families bring generations of experience, hard work, and dedication to raising quality beef for families throughout Utah and across the western United States.
While our operation has grown, our values have never changed.
Six Generations Strong
One of the things we're most proud of isn't simply the cattle we raise.

Today, the sixth generation is already learning the traditions that Grandpa Dean passed down so many years ago. From helping care for cattle to working with show steers, our children are learning firsthand what it means to work hard, care for animals, and respect the land that provides for us.
